Courtney Ryan Continues to Pave the Way for Athletes with Disabilities

From the Paralympics to the Advocacy Arena

Courtney Ryan, a 5-foot-9 forward and co-captain of the U.S. women's wheelchair basketball team, has been through her fair share of setbacks: a drunk driver's car accident, a shattered back, and partial paralysis.

Despite this adversity, Ryan has triumphed. She's a 2-time Olympian and a tireless advocate for people with disabilities. Ryan uses her platform to challenge stereotypes and empower others to pursue their dreams.

Ryan's Journey to the Paralympics

Ryan's athletic career began at age 10, playing basketball with her able-bodied friends.

After her accident in 2007, she discovered wheelchair basketball and quickly fell in love with the game.

In 2012, Ryan made her Paralympic debut at the London Paralympics, helping the U.S. team win a silver medal.

She went on to compete in the Rio Paralympics in 2016, where the team won a bronze medal.

Ryan's Advocacy Work

Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Ryan is also a passionate advocate for people with disabilities.

She has testified before Congress on behalf of the disability community and speaks at schools, businesses, and community events.

In 2016, Ryan co-founded the Courtney Ryan Fund, which provides grants to athletes with disabilities.

Ryan's advocacy is driven by her belief that everyone, regardless of their abilities, deserves to live a full and active life.
