ABC journalist’s new role sparks furore
By Jonathon Moran and Alexandra Smith
When ABC journalist Laura Tingle was appointed staff-elected director at the broadcaster on 1 May 2023, eyebrows were raised.
Tingle, who has been with the ABC since 1992, is no stranger to controversy. In her new role, she will be responsible for representing the views of the ABC’s 4000 staff to the board.
But some critics have questioned whether Tingle is the right person for the job, given her close relationship with ABC managing director David Anderson.
Tingle and Anderson were romantically involved in the early 2000s, and they remain close friends. Some critics have suggested that Tingle’s appointment could lead to a conflict of interest.
Tingle has defended her appointment, saying that she is committed to representing the views of all ABC staff.
“I am confident that I can do this job independently and fairly,” she said in a statement.
Despite Tingle’s assurances, the controversy is likely to continue. The ABC is a publicly funded broadcaster, and it is important that its staff are seen to be independent and impartial.
Tingle’s appointment has raised questions about the ABC’s commitment to these principles.
